About the author

Born in Germantown, Philadelphia, in 1871, Cornelius Weygandt studied at Germantown Academy and then at the University of Pennsylvania. He went on to spend much of his career at Penn, where he taught English and became especially associated with Irish literature as well as American regional writing.

He also wrote widely for general readers, and his books helped preserve the character of Pennsylvania German country and other parts of the mid-Atlantic landscape. Readers often remember his work for its lively sense of place and for the way it treats local customs, scenery, and community life with real fondness.

Weygandt died in 1957. Today he is remembered as both a teacher and a writer who celebrated regional culture without making it feel small or narrow.
