About the author

Born Cornelia Austin in Bath on April 23, 1815, she became known as Cornelia Mee, a British knitting and crochet pattern designer and writer. She is associated with the great wave of Victorian domestic craft publishing, producing books that turned needlework techniques into clear, usable instructions for everyday readers.

Her best-known titles include Mee's Companion to the Work-Table and Exercises in Knitting, works that gathered patterns and methods for knitting, netting, and crochet. Some of her publications were created with Mary Austin, and together their books helped popularize decorative and practical needlework during a period when home crafts were a central part of daily life.

Although not as widely known as major novelists of her century, her contribution has lasted in another way: through the survival of her manuals, patterns, and influence on craft history. She died in 1875, but her books still offer a vivid glimpse of how Victorian readers learned, shared, and enjoyed handmade work.
