Born in Minnesota on April 15, 1934, he moved to Southern California as a child and later studied art and anthropology at UCLA. Early in his career he worked at Disney, where he connected with Wernher von Braun and became involved in animation tied to space and science projects.

He is best known as one of the key visual effects artists behind Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), a film widely remembered for changing what cinematic effects could look like. He also co-founded Graphic Films, where he worked on films and visual concepts that blended technical precision with imagination.

Over the years, his work spanned special effects, animation, and computer graphics, making him an important behind-the-scenes figure in screen history. He died on January 2, 2026, leaving a legacy closely tied to some of the most influential visual storytelling of the modern era.
