During the French Revolution and the Napoleonic period, he built a reputation as an unusually capable military administrator, especially in supplying and organizing armies.

He became one of Napoleon’s trusted officials and is often remembered for the efficiency and energy he brought to the Grande Armée’s administration. Alongside his government career, he also wrote poetry and history, showing a strong literary side that stayed with him throughout his life.
