About the author

Born in Dorset in 1853 and educated at Rossall School, Clive Phillipps-Wolley was a British-born writer who later made his life in British Columbia. He served in public roles as well as writing extensively, and he was knighted in 1914.

He published fiction, poetry, and nonfiction, but he is especially remembered for travel and sporting writing. Titles associated with him include Sport in the Crimea and Caucasus, A Sportsman's Eden, and contributions to Big Game Shooting, works that drew on his firsthand experience of travel, hunting, and life outdoors.

His career reflects a very specific late-Victorian and Edwardian world: energetic, imperial, and deeply shaped by ideas of exploration and sport. For modern listeners, his books offer both lively adventure and a window into the attitudes and fascinations of his time.
