About the author

Born on February 11, 1871, Clive Day was an American professor, economist, and historian best known for writing A History of Commerce. He taught at Yale University and built a reputation for explaining how trade, industry, and economic life developed over time in clear, practical terms.

Day studied at the University of Michigan and later in Europe, and his career blended scholarship with public service. During 1918–1919, he served as chief of the Balkan Division of the American Commission to Negotiate Peace in Paris, contributing his regional knowledge at a pivotal moment after World War I.

He died on July 27, 1951. Though not widely known today, Day's career shows how historians and economists once moved easily between the classroom and the world of diplomacy, using careful research to help interpret fast-changing global events.
