A scholar of economic history, trade, and public affairs, he wrote with the clear, explanatory style of a teacher. His work on commerce and international questions reflects a career that moved between the classroom and the world of diplomacy.

by Clive Day
Born in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1871, Clive Hart Day was an American professor, historian, and writer best known for A History of Commerce. He graduated from Yale College in 1892, did postgraduate study in Berlin, and went on to teach history and economics at the University of California, Berkeley before joining Yale’s faculty.
Day’s career blended scholarship with public service. During the First World War era, he worked on international issues and served as chief of the Balkan Division of the American Commission to Negotiate Peace in Paris in 1918–1919. That background gave his writing a practical, worldly perspective as well as an academic one.
He died in 1951. Today, he is remembered mainly for writing that helped readers understand the history of trade and economic life in a broad, accessible way.
