About the author

Clement A. Miles, also known as Clement Arthur Miles, was an English writer and scholar of folklore whose best-known book is Christmas in Ritual and Tradition, Christian and Pagan (1912). In that study, he traced the history of Christmas observances across countries and centuries, looking at how Christian practice mixed with older seasonal customs.

An obituary published in Folk-Lore describes him as a member of the Folk-Lore Society and notes that he spent many years on the literary staff of publisher T. Fisher Unwin. It also says he had a wide knowledge of European languages, a strength that helped shape his writing and translation work.

Later in life, he worked with the Friends' War Victims' Relief Committee, and he died on February 2, 1918. Although little biographical detail seems easy to confirm today, his writing still stands out for its clear interest in the meanings behind popular tradition and festival life.
