About the author

Clement A. Miles, also known as Clement Arthur Miles, was an English writer and translator whose best-known book is Christmas in Ritual and Tradition, Christian and Pagan (1912). He wrote about folklore, religion, and seasonal customs in a way that brought together history, anthropology, and everyday celebration.

Sources from the period describe him as a member of the Folk-Lore Society and note that he worked for many years on the literary staff of publisher T. Fisher Unwin. He also translated works from French and, with a collaborator, from Italian, showing the wide range of his language interests.

Miles died on February 2, 1918, at the age of 37. Even with a short life, he left behind a book that has remained the work readers most strongly associate with his name, especially at Christmas time.
