About the author

Born in Iowa in 1921, Clark R. Mollenhoff became one of the standout investigative reporters of his era. He was widely associated with The Des Moines Register, where his reporting on labor racketeering and government abuses earned him the 1958 Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting.

His career reached beyond the newsroom. Mollenhoff also trained as an attorney, served as Presidential Special Counsel, wrote books, and later taught journalism at Washington and Lee University. Across those roles, he was remembered for tough, document-driven reporting and for helping define modern investigative journalism.

He died in 1991 at age 69. His work continues to be cited as part of the tradition of watchdog reporting in American public life.
