About the author
Clare Armstrong Bridgman was born on December 2, 1861, and died in 1937. She married writer and editor Walter Copeland Jerrold in 1895 and published under the name Clare Jerrold.
Her best-known work is a three-volume life of Queen Victoria: The Early Court of Queen Victoria (1912), The Married Life of Queen Victoria (1913), and The Widowhood of Queen Victoria (1916). Together, these books trace Victoria’s public role and private life across the major stages of her reign.
Clare and Walter Jerrold had six children, including the novelist Ianthe Jerrold and the artists Daphne and Phyllis Jerrold. The family’s literary and artistic connections continued across several generations.
