About the author

Born in Blankenburg in 1825, Claire von Glümer grew up in a liberal family shaped by political pressure and frequent moves across Germany, Switzerland, and France. She later became a writer and translator, and her work reflected both the turbulence of her era and her interest in women’s lives.

She is remembered as an early democratic voice connected to the world of the 1848 revolutions. Biographical sources describe her as a committed supporter of democratic ideas, and note that questions of political freedom and women’s emancipation found their way into her storytelling.

Alongside her own fiction and memoir writing, she translated literary works into German, helping bring other authors to new readers. She died in 1906, leaving behind novels, shorter prose, and autobiographical writing that link private life with the larger political struggles of the 19th century.
