About the author

Born in Ribandar, Goa, in March 1853, Cristóvão Aires de Magalhães Sepúlveda went on to study at Portugal’s Army School and the Curso Superior de Letras. He pursued a military career that rose to colonel, and he also taught at the War School, bringing together practical service and serious historical study.

He was a prolific writer, historian, journalist, and poet, and he also served in public life, including terms as a deputy and roles in civil administration. Much of his published work focused on Portuguese military history and reference scholarship, with major titles on the history of the Portuguese army and a notable bibliographic dictionary of the Peninsular War.

Sepúlveda died in Lisbon on June 10, 1930. Today he is remembered as a Luso-Goan intellectual whose books preserve a vast amount of material on Portugal’s military past and whose career moved with ease between the worlds of letters, teaching, politics, and the army.
