About the author

Christopher Whitworth Whall was a British stained-glass artist, born in 1849 and active from the 1880s into the early 20th century. He is widely remembered as one of the key artists who reshaped stained glass in the Arts and Crafts era, treating it not as factory-made decoration but as a deeply considered, hand-crafted art.

He trained first as a painter, and that background shows in the expressive drawing and color of his windows. Over time he became especially admired not only for major commissions in churches and public buildings, but also for his influence as a teacher and writer. His book Stained Glass Work helped explain his ideas about design, materials, and making, and it remained an important guide for later artists.

Whall died in 1924, but his reputation has lasted because of both his own work and the generations of stained-glass artists he inspired. He is still seen as a central name in the modern history of stained glass.
