Born into poverty and largely self-taught, this Welsh Baptist preacher became one of the best-known voices in Welsh Nonconformity. His vivid, dramatic sermons and hard-won life story helped make him a legendary figure in nineteenth-century religious history.

Born on December 25, 1766, near Llandysul in Cardiganshire, Wales, he grew up in difficult circumstances after his father died when he was young. Early accounts describe a rough childhood, little formal schooling, and a gradual move toward Christian faith before he entered the ministry.
He became a Baptist minister and was widely known across Wales as a powerful preacher. Sources describe him as a leading figure in Welsh Nonconformity, remembered especially for imaginative, memorable sermons and for the force of his speaking.
He died on July 19, 1838. Long after his death, he has continued to be remembered as one of the most famous Welsh preachers of his era, admired both for the strength of his preaching and for the remarkable path from hardship to influence.
