About the author

Born in 1796 at Fensmark near Næstved, Christian Winther grew up in a clerical household and later studied theology at the University of Copenhagen. He began publishing poetry in the early 1800s and became known for lyrical writing that combined grace, emotion, and a strong sense of nature.

Winther wrote poems, narrative verse, and prose, but he is especially remembered for Hjortens Flugt (1855), often described as one of the last major works of Danish Romanticism. He also wrote Flugten til Amerika, a fantasy-tinged tale that remained well known in Danish children’s literature.

His work was admired for its musical language and for the way it moved between idyllic beauty and more passionate feeling. Winther died in Paris in 1876, but his poetry continued to hold an important place in Danish literary history.
