About the author

Born in Høland, Norway, in 1859, Christian Sparre built an unusually wide-ranging life in the navy, politics, and literature. He trained as a naval officer after time in the merchant fleet, rose through the ranks, and eventually became commanding admiral. Alongside his military work, he was active in public life as a liberal politician and later served in Parliament.

As a writer, Sparre produced fiction, sea stories, and essays, often drawing on the worlds he knew best. Some of his books were published under the name Fredrik Viller, and his work helped bring Norwegian urban life and maritime experience to readers in an accessible, story-driven way.

He died in 1940 while traveling in the United States. Today he is remembered not only for his naval and political career, but also as an author whose background gave his books a strong sense of action, setting, and firsthand experience.
