About the author

Born in Halle an der Saale in 1784, Christian Keferstein was trained in law and worked in public service, but he is chiefly remembered for the scientific writing he pursued alongside and beyond that career. Contemporary biographical records describe him as a productive researcher and author in mineralogy and geognosy, with a strong interest in documenting geological formations and regional natural history.

Keferstein was largely self-taught in the earth sciences. Over time he published works on basalt, comparative geognosy, mineralogical travel reference books, and broader scholarly subjects, helping to spread geological knowledge in German-speaking lands during the first half of the nineteenth century.

He died in Halle in 1866. For readers today, his work offers a window into an era when careful observation, mapping, and wide-ranging scholarship were helping to shape modern geology.
