About the author

After building a successful business in Waterford, Edmund Ignatius Rice changed direction in the early 1800s and opened a school for poor boys. He believed education and religious instruction should be available to children who had little access to either, and that mission became the center of his life.

The small group of teachers who joined him eventually became the Brothers of the Christian Schools of Ireland, commonly known as the Christian Brothers. Rice founded schools first in Waterford and then in other Irish towns and cities, helping create a model of practical, faith-based education that spread widely.

He was later recognized by the Catholic Church and beatified in 1996. Today, he is remembered not as a literary author, but as the founder whose vision inspired generations of students and educators.
