About the author

Born in Berkshire in 1898 to Norwegian parents, Christian Augustus Barman studied architecture at the University of Liverpool and went on to work across architecture, design, and publishing. He became known not only as an industrial designer and administrator, but also as a clear, engaging writer with a strong interest in how cities, transport, and structures are made.

Barman edited major architectural journals in the early 1930s and later worked with London Transport, where he was closely involved in design and public-facing projects. That blend of professional experience and curiosity fed directly into his books, which include works on bridges, early railways, and the development of London Transport, as well as fiction.

He was appointed OBE and named a Royal Designer for Industry, reflecting the respect he earned in British design. He died in 1980, leaving behind writing that connects technical subjects with human history in a way that still feels approachable.
