About the author

Born in Haapajärvi in 1741 and later serving as a priest in Rantsila, Christfried Ganander was one of the earliest scholars to gather Finnish folk poetry, beliefs, and traditional knowledge in a serious way. His work came decades before the better-known folklore collections of the 19th century, which makes him an important early figure in Finnish literary and cultural history.

Ganander's most famous published book is Mythologia Fennica (1789), a landmark reference work on Finnish myth and folk tradition. He also compiled what is often described as the first extensive dictionary of the Finnish language, although it was not published during his lifetime.

What makes Ganander especially interesting today is how much of his work sits at the meeting point of language, religion, and oral tradition. He was not only writing things down: he was helping preserve a whole world of stories and vocabulary that might otherwise have been lost.
