author
A Chinese author, educator, and Baptist missionary, he helped bring traditional Chinese tales to English-language readers at the start of the 20th century. He is best known for co-authoring Chinese Fables and Folk Stories, a collection that introduced many readers to classic stories from China.

by Mary Hayes Davis, Chow-Leung
Born in China, Chow-Leung built a life in the United States as an author, educator, and missionary. He worked in Chicago's Chinatown, where he served as a Baptist minister and founded a Chinese language school for children in 1900.
He is most closely associated with Chinese Fables and Folk Stories (1908), written with Mary Hayes Davis. The book was presented as the first collection of Chinese fables printed in English, and it helped share stories from Chinese tradition with a wider English-speaking audience.
His work stands out for more than storytelling alone. By teaching, writing, and helping interpret Chinese life and literature for American readers, he played a small but meaningful part in a larger cultural exchange during a time when such bridges were rare.
