An adventurous writer and editor, she is often remembered alongside Jack London, but her own life was full of nerve, travel, and literary work. Her books and journals helped preserve the story of a remarkable partnership and a restless, wide-ranging era.

by Charmian London
Born in California in 1871, she grew up in the Bay Area and was educated largely at home, which helped shape the independence and curiosity that became her trademark. She went on to become a writer, editor, and skilled horsewoman, and she is best known as Jack London’s wife and close literary companion.
She traveled widely with Jack London, including the famous voyage of the Snark, and turned those experiences into books and journals of her own. After Jack London’s death in 1916, she worked to preserve his legacy and remained an important figure in the history of the ranch and home they built in Glen Ellen.
Charmian London died in 1955. Today she is increasingly recognized not just as part of Jack London’s story, but as a strong writer and adventurous personality in her own right.
