About the author
Born on June 7, 1854, in Burg on the island of Fehmarn, Charlotte Niese was a German writer, poet, and teacher. Her father was a pastor, and she trained as a teacher in Eckernförde before working as a tutor and educator in several places, including North Schleswig, the Rhineland, and Montreux.
After returning to live with her mother, she turned more fully to writing and went on to publish a large body of work, including novels, stories, and poems. She became especially known for historical and regional fiction connected with Holstein, and some sources note that she also wrote under the pseudonym Lucian Bürger.
Niese died in Altona on December 8, 1935. Though she is less widely read today, she was a notably prolific author in her time and remained popular with German middle-class readers for decades.
