About the author

Born in Liverpool in 1845, Charles William Stubbs was educated at the Liverpool Collegiate Institution and Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. He was ordained in the Church of England and served in several parish posts before rising to become Dean of Ely and later Bishop of Truro.

Stubbs was remembered not just as a church leader but as a public-minded writer with a deep interest in social questions. He wrote on religion, village life, and political issues affecting ordinary people, and he was known for liberal views in both theology and politics.

That combination of pastoral work, public speaking, and social engagement gives his writing a direct, humane character. Whether preaching, lecturing, or publishing books, he aimed to connect Christian belief with the real pressures of everyday life.
