About the author

Born in 1858 into the prosperous Stanford family, Charles Thomas-Stanford became a prominent figure in Sussex public life. He served as mayor of Brighton from 1910 to 1913 and later as Conservative MP for Brighton from 1914 to 1922. He was closely associated with Preston Manor, the family home that was later bequeathed to Brighton after his death in 1932.

Alongside his political career, he was also an author of local and historical works. Records of his publications identify him as the writer of books connected with Brighton and Preston, and he is remembered for documenting the history of the places and institutions around him.

That mix of public service and historical curiosity gives his work its appeal today. His books offer more than dates and names: they open a window onto Sussex society and the world of one of the county’s best-known families.
