About the author

Born in Bountiful, Utah, on October 4, 1877, Charles Rendell Mabey studied in local public schools and graduated from the University of Utah with a teaching certificate. Before entering higher office, he worked as a teacher and school administrator, served in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War, and spent several years as a missionary in Germany for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Mabey built his political career close to home, serving as mayor of Bountiful and later in the Utah legislature. In 1920 he was elected Utah’s fifth governor, serving from 1921 to 1925 as a Republican.

He died on April 26, 1959. Remembered mainly for his role in Utah public life, Mabey’s background in education, public service, and community leadership gives his biography a grounded, distinctly regional character.
