About the author

Born in Birmingham in 1777, Charles Pye was a British engraver who trained under the noted engraver James Heath. He was the elder brother of the landscape engraver John Pye, and he built a career producing line engravings, especially for books and illustrated publications.

His work included topographical subjects, portraits, and small book illustrations. Records from the Royal Academy describe him as an engraver and illustrator of books and pocket annuals, and his engravings appeared in publications such as Beauties of England Illustrated, Hunter's History of London, and Britannia Depicta.

Pye was also an author. He is associated with A Description of Modern Birmingham, a work that reflects his close connection to his home city and its rapid growth. He died in 1864.
