About the author

Born in Bromley, Kent, on January 22, 1894, Charles Langbridge Morgan was a British novelist, playwright, and critic. He was educated for a naval career and served during the First World War, an experience that shaped his early life before he turned fully toward literature.

Morgan became widely known both for his fiction and for his work as drama critic for The Times from 1926 to 1939. His best-known books include The Fountain and Sparkenbroke, and his writing often explored the ties between art, love, and mortality with unusual seriousness and grace.

He was married to the Welsh novelist Hilda Vaughan, and he remained an important literary figure in Britain until his death in London on February 6, 1958. Readers who enjoy reflective, beautifully turned prose often find a great deal to admire in his work.
