About the author

Born in Greenwich in 1788, he was the youngest son of a surgeon and was educated privately. After a short period in business, he turned toward scholarship and writing, building a reputation as an English historian with a strong interest in medieval Europe and the wider religious world.

His best-known works include History of the Crusades for the Recovery and Possession of the Holy Land, History of Mohammedanism, and History of Chivalry. These books combined narrative energy with broad historical ambition, making complex subjects accessible to general readers in the early 1800s.

He died in 1826, still relatively young, but his work remained well known for many years afterward. Readers drawn to sweeping historical storytelling will find in his writing an early and influential attempt to explain the ideals, conflicts, and legends of the medieval past.
