A scientist, educator, and college president, he moved between American academia and early modern China at a time of major change. His writing reflects a practical mind shaped by both scholarship and public service.

by John Clark Ridpath, G. Mercer (Graeme Mercer) Adam, Charles K. (Charles Keyser) Edmunds
Born in Baltimore in 1876, Charles Keyser Edmunds was an American engineer and physicist who built much of his career around education. He taught and worked in China, where he became closely connected with Lingnan University in Canton, and later returned to the United States.
Edmunds went on to serve as president of both Lingnan University and Pomona College in California. Alongside his academic and administrative work, he also wrote, including books such as Modern Education in China and a biography of James Otis, showing interests that ranged from educational reform to history.
He died on January 8, 1949. Today he is remembered less as a conventional literary figure than as a thoughtful educator whose work linked science, higher education, and cross-cultural exchange.
