About the author

Born in Baltimore in 1876, Charles Keyser Edmunds studied at Johns Hopkins University and trained as a physicist. Early in his career he taught physics and electrical engineering, but he is remembered most for the way he brought scientific training into academic leadership.

Edmunds spent many important years in China, where he taught at Lingnan and went on to serve as president of Lingnan University in Canton (now Guangzhou). His writing reflects that cross-cultural experience: alongside short historical works, he also wrote about education in China for English-language readers.

After returning to the United States, he became the first provost of Johns Hopkins University and later served as president of Pomona College in California. He died in 1949, leaving a career that linked science, international education, and college administration across two continents.
