1827–1867
Drawn to the wild landscapes of southern Africa, this 19th-century explorer turned dangerous journeys into vivid travel writing. His books mix adventure, natural history, and close observation of places that were little known to European readers at the time.
Born in Sweden on March 4, 1827, Charles John Andersson became known as an explorer, hunter, trader, and keen amateur naturalist. He is especially remembered for his travels in southern Africa, much of it in what is now Namibia, where he built his reputation through both exploration and writing.
Andersson traveled with Francis Galton on an early expedition and later continued exploring on his own. Along the way he collected observations on wildlife and birdlife as well as local geography, and these interests shaped the books he published about the region. His writing helped introduce many readers to the landscapes and animals of southern Africa.
He died in Angola on July 9, 1867, at just 40 years old. No suitable verified portrait image in JPEG, PNG, or WEBP format was confirmed during this search, so no profile image is included.
