by Charles J. (Charles Jerome) Callan
Born in New York in 1877, he entered the Dominican Order after studying at Canisius College and was ordained in 1905. Reference works describe him as an American priest and theologian, and library records show a long publishing career that continued for decades.
He is especially associated with Catholic teaching and biblical commentary. His books include works on the Acts of the Apostles, the Epistles of St. Paul, prayer books, and editions of the Catechism of the Council of Trent, often prepared with fellow Dominican John A. McHugh.
He also helped shape Catholic periodical writing: histories of Homiletic and Pastoral Review note that he succeeded its founder alongside McHugh and helped broaden the magazine's scope. He died in 1962.
