About the author

Born in Lynn, Massachusetts, in 1851, he became known as an American naturalist, conservationist, and prolific writer. Over the course of his career, he produced more than 40 books along with a huge number of magazine and newspaper pieces, often drawing on his interest in wildlife, travel, and life outdoors.

He is especially remembered for his work around the sea. Holder was an early champion of big-game fishing and helped found the Tuna Club of Avalon on Santa Catalina Island, a group often described as the first organized club of its kind. That mix of curiosity, showmanship, and firsthand experience gave his writing an energetic, accessible feel.

Later in life he was also active in Southern California civic and cultural circles, including work connected with Pasadena. For readers today, his appeal lies in the way he blended popular science, adventure writing, and a genuine enthusiasm for the natural world.
