Charles Expilly

1814–1886

A restless 19th-century French journalist and man of letters, he turned travel, politics, and sharp social observation into books that still catch readers' attention. His writing on Brazil is especially noted for its vivid, often controversial portrait of the country and its customs.

About the author

Born in Salon-de-Provence in 1814 and dying in Tain-l’Hermitage in 1886, Charles Expilly was a French journalist, historian, essayist, and literary writer. Bibliographic records and reference sources also identify him as Jean Charles Marie Expilly, reflecting the fuller form of his name.

He is remembered in part for spending time in South America and for writing about Brazil, including Le Brésil tel qu'il est and Les femmes et les moeurs du Brésil. Those works helped build his reputation as an observant and outspoken writer interested in politics, society, and everyday life beyond France.

For audiobook listeners, Expilly offers a window onto the 19th century through a voice shaped by journalism as much as literature: curious, direct, and engaged with the wider world.
