About the author

Born near Bath in 1827, Charles Edward Davis was an English architect and antiquary who spent much of his career closely connected with the city. He came from an architectural family, and that blend of building knowledge and historical interest shaped the work he became known for.

Davis is especially associated with Bath’s archaeology and architectural history. He wrote on the city’s landmarks and baths, and he is remembered for his role in excavations connected with the Roman Baths, helping draw fresh attention to one of Britain’s most famous historic sites.

He died in 1902. Today, he is chiefly remembered as one of the Victorian figures who tried to record, interpret, and preserve Bath’s layered past while also taking part in its changing urban life.
