Born in Strasbourg in 1859, Charles Diehl became one of France’s best-known specialists in Byzantine art and history. He studied at the École Normale Supérieure and went on to build a career as a historian and archaeologist, with a particular interest in the Byzantine Empire and its culture.

Diehl taught at major French universities and earned a reputation as a clear, engaging writer as well as a serious scholar. His work explored both the grand sweep of Byzantine civilization and the vivid lives of its emperors, empresses, and artists, helping many readers discover a world that was often overlooked.

Over time, his scholarship brought him broad recognition, including membership in the Académie française. He died in 1944, but his writings remain an important gateway for readers curious about Byzantium and the medieval Mediterranean.
