About the author

Born in Strasbourg on January 19, 1859, Charles Diehl became one of the key French historians of Byzantium. He taught at the University of Nancy and later at the Sorbonne, building a reputation as a major scholar of Byzantine history, art, and civilization.

Diehl is often described as one of the founders of modern Byzantine studies in France. Alongside his academic work, he also wrote about Venice and the broader Mediterranean, with a style that aimed to make serious history lively and approachable.

He died in Paris on November 1, 1944. Today he is remembered both for his scholarly influence and for books that helped generations of readers see the Byzantine Empire and Renaissance Venice as rich, human worlds rather than distant names in history.
