1821–1885
A lively 19th-century French man of letters, he moved between the stage and the page, writing fiction, journalism, libretti, and plays. His career carried the energy of travel, performance, and popular storytelling.

by Charles Deslys
Born in Paris on March 1, 1821, Charles Deslys was the pen name of Charles Collinet, a French writer, journalist, librettist, and dramatist. He studied at the Lycée Charlemagne, traveled in Italy, and began his artistic life in the theater before building a broad literary career.
Deslys worked as both performer and writer, touring in the south of France as a singer or actor and later publishing numerous stories, plays, and serialized works. That mix of stage experience and popular writing helped shape a career that ranged across several forms rather than staying in a single genre.
He died in Paris on March 13, 1885. Though not as widely remembered today as some of his contemporaries, he was a notably versatile figure in 19th-century French literary life.
