About the author

An English author and historian, Charles Dalton (1850–1913) was a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and was noted for his work on British military history. He wrote and edited books focused on army records, officers, and campaigns, combining documentary research with readable narrative.

Among his best-known works is The Waterloo Roll Call, a detailed account of the officers and soldiers connected with the Battle of Waterloo. He also worked on English Army Lists and Commission Registers, 1661–1714 and wrote other historical studies, helping preserve material that has been useful to later historians and genealogists.

Dalton’s writing has an orderly, factual style, but it also shows real enthusiasm for the people behind the records. For listeners drawn to military biography, regimental history, and the texture of nineteenth-century historical scholarship, his work offers both information and character.
