Born in 1827, Charles Beard was an English Unitarian minister, theologian, and author. He studied at Manchester New College and the University of London, and later continued his education in Berlin. Over the course of his career he served congregations in England and became a respected voice in liberal religious thought.
Beard wrote on theology, church history, and the Reformation, and he also helped shape intellectual life beyond the pulpit. He was closely associated with Liverpool, where he taught and worked in higher education, and he served as editor of Theological Review. His writing is remembered for combining serious scholarship with an accessible style.
