About the author

Born at Blackheath in 1845, Charles Alan Fyffe was an English historian, journalist, and political candidate. He studied at Balliol College, Oxford, and became known not only for historical writing but also for his reporting, especially during the Franco-Prussian War.

Fyffe is most closely associated with A History of Modern Europe, a widely read account of European history in the years after 1789. He also wrote shorter historical works, including a book on Greece, and earned a reputation for explaining complex political events in a readable way.

His career moved between scholarship, journalism, and public life, which gives his writing an unusually immediate feel. He died in 1892 at the age of 46, but his histories continued to be read for many years afterward.
