Born in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, in 1850, Cayetano Coll y Toste became one of the island’s best-known historians and literary figures. He studied medicine in Barcelona and earned his medical degree in 1874, but his lasting reputation came from the energy he brought to writing, journalism, and historical research.
He wrote across several genres and is especially remembered for documenting Puerto Rico’s colonial and cultural history. He later served as the Official Historian of Puerto Rico, and his work helped gather, organize, and share material that might otherwise have been lost or overlooked.
Coll y Toste died in Madrid in 1930. Today he is remembered as a wide-ranging intellectual whose books opened a path for readers interested in Puerto Rico’s people, legends, and historical record.
