by Carlos María Ocantos
Born in Buenos Aires in 1860, Carlos María Ocantos was an Argentine writer and diplomat. Reliable biographical sources describe him as an early realist in Argentine literature, and several note the influence of Spanish realism, especially the tradition associated with Benito Pérez Galdós.
His best-known works include León Zaldívar and Quilito, novels remembered for their attention to society, everyday life, and the tensions of a rapidly changing Argentina. Alongside his literary work, he served in the diplomatic corps, a path that connected his life in Argentina with a long period in Europe.
Ocantos eventually settled in Spain and died in Madrid in 1949. His career stands out for linking public service with a large body of fiction, and for helping shape the realist novel in Argentina at the turn of the century.
