by Carlo Belgiojoso
Born in Milan on August 17, 1815, Carlo Barbiano di Belgiojoso was an Italian writer, painter, and politician. Sources agree that he belonged to the Belgiojoso aristocratic family, and several library and reference records identify him under the author form Carlo Belgiojoso (1815–1881).
He studied law at the University of Pavia, but he also cultivated a serious interest in the arts. Art references describe him as a painter shaped by the influence of Francesco Hayez, and he exhibited historical and portrait works in Milan. As a writer, he is especially associated with Il Conte di Virtù, a historical novel centered on fourteenth-century Italy.
Belgiojoso also took part in public life during the Risorgimento era and later served in Italian political institutions. He died in Milan on June 22, 1881. Together, the records portray him as a versatile nineteenth-century figure whose work bridged storytelling, visual art, and civic engagement.
