About the author
Born in Prats de Molló on May 15, 1831, and later settled in La Jonquera, he lived across the cultural borderlands of Catalonia and southern France. He studied arts and literature in Toulouse and natural sciences in Barcelona, and that mix of literary training and close observation of the natural world shaped much of his writing.
He became known as a Catalan writer of the second half of the 19th century, especially for naturalist writing rooted in country life. His interests were wide-ranging — including painting, chess, fishing, hunting, and excursionism — and those pursuits helped give his books a strong sense of place and everyday experience.
He was also involved in the cultural life of Barcelona during the Renaixença, the period of renewed Catalan literary and cultural energy. He died in La Jonquera on October 15, 1897, and is remembered as a writer who connected literature, landscape, and local tradition in a particularly grounded way.
