About the author

Born in Prats de Molló in 1831 and later linked closely to La Jonquera, he came from a landowning family and studied in Toulouse before managing family properties near the Catalan border. That close knowledge of the countryside fed directly into his writing, which is remembered for its strong sense of place and attention to rural society.

He published much of his literary work later in life, building a reputation through books such as Records d'un excursionista, Pla i muntanya, and the novel L'hereu Noradell. Readers and critics have associated him with the realist and naturalist traditions in Catalan literature, especially for the way he drew on direct observation, popular language, and life in the mountains.

Beyond writing, he was known for wide-ranging interests that included painting, chess, fishing, hunting, and excursionism. He died in 1897, but he remains a notable voice in 19th-century Catalan letters.
