About the author

Born in Stollberg in Saxony on January 12, 1869, Carl Gottlob Friedrich Küchler became a German researcher of Nordic studies as well as a travel writer. Reference sources identify Iceland and the Faroe Islands as his special area of interest, and they note that he studied German studies and Scandinavian languages in Copenhagen.

Küchler also worked in publishing, including as a travel editor for Baedeker, and wrote a number of books on northern Europe that reached a broad readership. Alongside that work, he published historical biographies such as Elizabeth, Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary and Queen Maria Sophia of Naples, bringing major European lives to general readers.

He died in Stollberg on May 15, 1945. Although he is not widely known today, his books reflect an enduring interest in travel, history, and the cultures of the North.
