A Finnish schoolmaster and writer from the 1800s, he wrote with a teacher’s eye for everyday life and the past. His surviving work offers small, vivid glimpses of older Finnish customs, people, and places.

by Carl Ferdinand Nordlund
Born in Luvia in 1820, Carl Ferdinand Nordlund was a Finnish educator and writer. He is remembered as a headmaster as well as an author, and he also wrote under the pen names K. Pohjanen and vanha koulumies.
Nordlund worked in the world of schools and letters at the same time. He served as editor of the newspaper Lännetär in Pori in the 1860s, and his background in teaching seems to fit the clear, observant tone associated with his writing.
Today he is most easily found through Kuvaelmia menneitten aikojen eloista ja oloista, a work that looks back at life in earlier times in Finland through short historical sketches. He died in 1905 in Porvoo. His family also included the painter Elin Nordlund, his daughter.
