About the author

Born on October 15, 1856, in Bredelykke near Gram, Carl Ewald was a Danish novelist, satirist, journalist, and translator. He is especially remembered for his fairy tales, including nature stories shaped by an interest in the living world and in the ideas of his time.

After studying as a young man, he worked for some years as a teacher and school principal before turning fully to writing and journalism in the 1880s. Over time he published novels, plays, historical fiction, and children’s stories, but his lasting reputation rests above all on the inventive tales that gave voices and personalities to creatures and forces of nature.

Ewald died on February 23, 1908. More than a century later, he remains a distinctive figure in Danish literature, admired for stories that are playful on the surface yet often thoughtful underneath.
