About the author

Born in Vienna on September 9, 1892, Carl Ehrenstein was an Austrian prose writer, poet, and translator. Reliable reference sources agree that he worked as a translator from English and Danish, and that he was the younger brother of the writer Albert Ehrenstein.

Archival and biographical records describe a life that stretched beyond Austria: he moved to England in 1922 and later worked there not only as a translator, but also as a literary agent for English- and German-speaking authors and publishers. He died on January 10, 1971, in Bromley, then in Kent, near London.

Although he is less widely known today than some of his contemporaries, Ehrenstein's career stands out for its range. He wrote prose and poetry while also helping literature travel between languages, a role that made him part author and part cultural bridge.
