About the author

Born in Basel on January 10, 1868, Carl Albrecht Bernoulli was a Swiss Protestant theologian, church historian, and writer. He studied theology in Neuchâtel, Basel, Strasbourg, and Marburg, and later qualified in church history at the University of Basel.

After an early academic career, he gave up university teaching and lived for years as a freelance writer in cities including Paris, London, and Berlin before returning to the Basel area. Alongside scholarly work, he published literary writing under the pseudonym Ernst Kilchner.

Bernoulli died in Arlesheim on February 13, 1937. He is often noted not only as a theologian and historian, but also as a thoughtful interpreter of Friedrich Nietzsche and Franz Overbeck, which gives his work an unusual place between religion, intellectual history, and literature.
