About the author

Born in Delfshaven on June 20, 1843, and later dying in Wiesbaden on August 2, 1913, he was a Dutch writer and journalist remembered for both fiction and literary commentary. Sources consistently describe him as a novelist and journalist, and note that he also published under the pseudonyms Gabriël and J. van den Oude.

Before settling into literary life, he spent a short period as a civil servant in the Dutch East Indies, then returned to the Netherlands. There he became associated with major newspapers, including the Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant, and also wrote reviews and other pieces for the press.

His writing is especially linked with travel stories and fantastic or imaginative literature. That mix of journalism, criticism, and storytelling gives his work a lively, wide-ranging character that still makes him an interesting figure in Dutch literary history.
