1813–1869
A writer, soldier, and patriot of the Italian Risorgimento, he turned firsthand experience of war and revolution into vivid historical writing. His life moved between exile, journalism, political struggle, and military action.

by Candido Augusto Vecchi
Born in Fermo in either 1813 or 1814, according to differing reference works, he became known as an Italian patriot, military figure, and historian closely tied to the Risorgimento.
Biographical sources describe him as active in journalism and politics, fighting in Lombardy in 1848, serving in the Roman Constituent Assembly in 1849, and helping defend the Roman Republic. He later joined Garibaldi’s Expedition of the Thousand, giving him a rare perspective as both participant and chronicler of Italy’s national struggle.
He is especially remembered for historical works on the upheavals of 1848–1849, including La Italia: storia di due anni, 1848-1849. That blend of action and authorship gives his writing an immediacy that still makes it valuable to readers interested in the making of modern Italy.
